29 JAN 2012 - PERTH INTO GRAND FINAL BEATING MELBOURNE 3-1!

OVERVIEW:  Not for the first time during this highly successful season the Perth Heat proved their scoring efficiency by dominating the runs column 28-18, even though they only held a smallish margin of 45 hits versus 41 by the Melbourne Aces. The Heat did cough up six errors to three yet, obviously, the Aces were unable to make enough use of them against Perth’s pitching prowess. The Perth Heat have earned a real chance to defend their 2011 Championship with another home Grand Final series after sending the Aces packing 3-1. Melbourne will be looking for a return battle in a fortnight if they can get past Sydney in a home Preliminary Final series.

REPORT:  The Melbourne Aces may not be blessed with the depth of import talent that some other teams have, yet they are certainly not lacking in team spirit or resilience. And, they needed all of that to get a positive result out of this opening playoff game in Perth after what was a good, old fashioned, barn burner! The game started in much the same manner as it finished with both teams trading blows in the first inning. Melbourne’s leadoff batter Dominic Ramos fired the first shot with his game opening home run over right field, only to be out-done by Perth star Tim Kennelly who replied with a two-run blast over left field. The Aces wrested back the advantage with three more runs over the next couple of frames, but when Perth scored one in the bottom of the fifth the game hung tenuously at 4-3 in favour of the guests. Melbourne could thank their ace starter Travis Blackley for their early advantage as he demonstrated his major league pedigree by striking out eight over his five-plus innings. Meanwhile, the Aces had knocked Heat starter Daniel Schmidt out of the game after three innings and they were now battling solid import Jack Frawley who navigated his way through six turbulent innings. After three scoreless late innings, the contest reached a crescendo in the ninth when Melbourne appeared to take a decisive hold with three runs in the top of the ninth for a 7-3 lead, but this game had another twist left in its tale. Hard-throwing Melbourne reliever Andrew Russell had done well to clean up the previous two innings; however, a leadoff error, a couple of hits and an unfortunate infield single saw him replaced by veteran Cameron Forbes with one out and two runs scored. Forbes could not prevent another two runs crossing the plate as the Perth Heat had rallied to dramatically tie the game with a “four spot”. Far from being shell-shocked, the Aces responded with a one out walk for their game MVP Dominic Ramos who later scored what was to be the winning run in the top of the tenth. Forbes kept the pulse rate high in the Melbourne dugout during the bottom of the tenth before ending the game with a bases loaded double play. Forbes collected the win to hand Perth’s star reliever Benn Grice the loss. As mentioned, Ramos was the key man for the Aces with two hits, two walks and two RBIs, followed by Justin Huber, Josh Davies and Kevin David who also had two-hit games. The Heat had even more hits with Mitch Graham recording three, ahead of Tim Kennelly, Aaron Bonomi, James McOwen, Luke Hughes and Corey Adamson each with two. Yep, this one was a barn burner right down to the very exciting end. It's 1-0... no more and no less than that!

REPORT:  The heavily favoured Perth Heat wasted little time reasserting their air of supremacy in this league by posting five runs in the opening frame of Game 2 in this major semi-final. Five successive one out hits blazed the trail for this victory, rounded off by Luke Hughes' RBI double, Mitch Graham's three run homer and Allan de San Miguel's solo long ball. This was enough to chase Melbourne starter Nicholas Ungs, who finished the inning, but he did not return for the next. German Markus Solbach took over to do a decent job for the Aces in long relief as the teams traded two runs each in the second inning and a run each in the fifth. Youngster Kyle Bedford added to his experience pool by pitching at the end for the Aces. Perth starter Warwick Saupold has hardly needed much run support during his superb 2012 season, yet he'd have welcomed the explosive start that ensured him another win tonight. Cameron Lamb was very strong again out of the bullpen and, after Trevor Fox wobbled, Geoff Brown found the lead close sufficiently for him to record a save. 'Mighty Mitch' Graham had the biggest swing in the first inning and he didn't stop there to finish his night with 3-5 and four massive RBIs. Star team mates Luke Hughes, Corey Adamson, Tim Kennelly and Mychal Givens each bagged two hits for the Heat. For Melbourne the reliable and versatile Scott Wearne delivered on the big stage with 3-5, as did rookie pro Darryl George with the same 3-5 effort. Justin Huber and Kevin David had two hits apiece for the Aces, as did young Minnesota pro Josh Hendricks who made an impressive return to the roster. One other interesting sidelight to Melbourne's statistics was the appearance of recently converted pitching star Andrew Russell who pinch hit for his first at bat of this season. For those who may have forgotten, this super-slugger had 129 at bats in the 2011 ABL for a mighty .357 batting average... although he has been a pitching bonus, how the Aces have missed his offence and defence this season! Although the teams shared 13 hits each at the end of this game, the contest was pretty much decided by that big outbreak in the first.

REPORT:  The Melbourne Aces hierarchy would be entitled to scratch their heads in bewilderment while pondering how the Perth Heat could possibly be blessed with the arrival of recent major league pitcher Virgil Vasquez into their lineup. While the Aces struggled to get players available to make the trip west, an already stacked Perth roster was able to add a fresh quality arm to the team that was already runaway competition leaders. Like most, I have no plausible answer for this, but I do know that it gave the Heat a decisive advantage in Game 3 of this major semi-final. After allowing three hits and a run in the top of the first, Vasquez hardly gave the Aces a sniff until he was out of gas in the eighth inning. The former Detroit and Pittsburgh major leaguer was clearly the difference between these teams as he took the win and set up the save for Benn Grice. Not unlike Game 2, Perth was quick out of the blocks with four runs in the opening frame that consigned Melbourne starter Jeff Jamnik to the loss, even though he did his best to regroup. In trademark fashion the Aces refused to surrender meekly while manager Phil Dale rung the pitching and defensive changes. In the end the narrow margin of 11-9 hits for the hosts didn't really tell the tale of quite a comfortable victory and a 2-1 series lead. Imports Dylan Jones, Mychal Givens and James McOwen had two hits for the Heat, while stalwarts Justin Huber, Brad Harman and Elliot Biddle had the same output for the Aces. Oh what the Melbourne Aces would give for a Virgil Vasquez!

REPORT:  For a very long while in this game it looked like Justin Huber’s RBI single that drove in Elliot Biddle was going to be enough for the Melbourne Aces to level this series in Perth. Having been unceremoniously knocked out of Game 2 after pitching just one ugly inning, Aces' starter Nic Ungs certainly bounced back in fine style here to pilot Melbourne’s 1-0 lead into the seventh inning before he was lifted following Tim Kennelly’s one out single. Atlanta pro Andrew Russell was asked to preserve the lead but, after struggling to locate the plate umpire’s zone, he could not prevent James McOwen from tying the game with his two out RBI single. The ball was then entrusted to Bubbie Buzachero for the bottom of the eighth and, although he battled gamely under considerable pressure following a leadoff walk, he was also torched with two out by Mitch Graham’s two RBI single up the middle. That was all the Heat needed to back up another excellent start from Geoff Brown and to give Cameron Lamb the ‘Big W’ next to his name. In a game that did not feature an extra base hit, only Josh Hendricks and Dominic Ramos found two hits for Melbourne and McOwen had two for Perth. The only saving grace for the Aces after a tough loss was the fact that they didn’t need to find any more pitching for a double header Game 5 in scorching WA heat. They head home for a Preliminary Final series hosting Sydney next weekend while the Heat will await the winner of that for a Championship series in Perth.

SUMMARY:  Amid their galaxy of stars, the often underrated Mitch Graham stood at the top of Perth’s offensive list with team highs of eight hits and six RBIs as he maintained his remarkable consistency. Import James McOwen had seven hits, one more than Tim Kennelly and Corey Adamson, while Kennelly also drove in five runs. Graham, Kennelly and Allan de San Miguel each homered for the Heat. Justin Huber led Melbourne with seven hits, three doubles and five RBIs to surpass Kevin David and Brad Harman with five knocks. Only Dominic Ramos left the yard for the Aces in Game 1. Former major leaguer Virgil Vasquez was the pick of the pitching crop, although opposing Game 4 starters Geoff Brown and Nic Ungs were also worthy of mention. Brown also collected a save in Game 2 for two strong outings, as did his bullpen mate Cameron Lamb. Travis Blackley was also impressive starting Game 1 for Melbourne.

29 JAN 2012 - SYDNEY ELIMINATES ADELAIDE 3-1 AT NORWOOD!

OVERVIEW:  It won’t give the Adelaide Bite much pleasure to realise that they out-hit Sydney 27 to 22 over this home series while they were on the receiving end of a 1-3 playoffs elimination. At the end of a refreshingly low scoring series, the Blue Sox used ten runs in Game 3 to boast a narrow 19-15 edge in runs scored. Adelaide might well bemoan the five errors that shattered their hopes in Game 3 to leave them with seven fumbles compared with Sydney’s five. While Adelaide might have expected to advance after this home semi-final, it is the Sydney Blue Sox who will be heading to Melbourne for a Preliminary Final showdown next weekend.

REPORT:  The Sydney Blue Sox had two players to thank most for this victory from their opening playoff game in Adelaide tonight... one was a canny former professional and one was a young emerging professional. The “old stager” was starting pitcher Craig Anderson who often rises to the big occasion and he did so here with 6.2 innings that earned him the win with seven strike outs along the way. All three of Adelaide’s runs scored against him were unearned as he combined with Matt Williams and Dae-Sung Koo, who got the save, to keep the Bite under wraps. The young tyro that supplied most of the run support was Colorado outfielder David Kandilas who cracked an ice-breaking two run homer in the top of the third, then he walked, stole a base and scored to add a vital run in the seventh. He caused most of the headaches for Adelaide starter Dushan Ruzic, who took the loss, before Derek Miramontes was impressive at the end to give the Bite some hope of a comeback. The story of this game was the efficiency of the Blue Sox pitching that allowed just five hits and none of those went for extra bases, plus zero walks... not forgetting three-RBI man Mr. Kandilas of course! Only Sydney’s Michael Lysaught had two hits during a game that featured some very tough pitching. Sydney leads 1-0 away from home.

REPORT:  Over the last couple of weeks 'Flintoff & Dunn' has mentioned how rare complete games have become for pitchers in modern times. This trend was broken by Ryan Searle in Brisbane, then by Adelaide evergreen Darren Fidge and now by Adelaide's former pro Paul Mildren in this important semi-final. Mildren has often found his best at Norwood Oval and he certainly didn't disappoint home fans with this virtuoso nine inning effort of stunning proportions. Maybe more remarkable was the fact that he was on the back foot when Sydney took advantage of a leadoff walk and Mildren's own throwing error to open the scoring with a three-run third. It would have helped him settle when the Bite hit back hard with five runs from the fourth and fifth innings. The big guy who would have been MVP on nearly any other night was Adelaide import Calvin Anderson who doubled and homered with four RBIs as part of his 3-4 game. While Mildren held the Blue Sox to just three hits, he got the better of Sydney's former major leaguer Chris Oxspring who took the loss and professional Todd Van Steensel who was stung by Adelaide's three-run eighth. Other than Anderson, no player could manage more than one hit, but we must mention Sydney youngster David Kandilas whose hot form carried over from Game 1 with his two RBI double that put his team in front, albeit briefly. This was the Mildren and Anderson show! Series 1-1.

REPORT:  Adelaide rain caused the postponement of Game 3 that was scheduled for Saturday night 28 January. Having led the washed out game last night 8-0 after just a couple of innings, the Sydney Blue Sox would feel vindicated by their comfortable 10-4 victory in Game 3 of this series. Not even two home runs from Adelaide’s superstar import Denny Almonte and another from catcher Carlton Tanabe could de-rail the Sydney steamroller in this matinee of a Sunday double header. Sydney scrambled three runs from an error riddled third inning and another in the fifth to stake their claim at 4-2 after five, but it was three-run jacks from Boss Moanaroa in the seventh and Michael Lysaught in the ninth that really put this contest to bed for the ‘B-Sox’. Red Sox pro Moanaroa once again demonstrated his plate discipline with 1-2, three walks and the three run bomb to headline Sydney’s offence ahead of another more senior Red Sox professional in Mitch Dening who had two hits. Almonte and Tanabe not only hit the long balls for the Bite, but they were also their only two-hit men on the day. Before the late innings explosion young Aidan Francis continued his breakthrough season on the hill for Sydney with a strong winning start that ate up eight innings. He got the better of Adelaide’s veteran starter Pat Ahearne who was really victimised by unearned runs to take the loss. The Adelaide Bite actually out-hit Sydney 8-7, yet it counted for little in the end.

REPORT:  Notwithstanding the fact that they out-hit the visiting Sydney Blue Sox for the second time on this double header Sunday, the Adelaide Bite find themselves out of the running for the 2012 ABL Championship after falling 0-1 to the Blue Sox in Game 4. It was a key player of this series, David Kandilas, who came to the fore again with his leadoff double in the fourth inning that led to Pat Maat’s fielder’s choice RBI as the only run of the game. Vaughan Harris was the man to anchor the victory for Sydney with six-plus efficient innings as he did the spade work for Matt Williams and Dae-Sung Koo to round off the combined shutout. Only in the bottom of the seventh did the Bite threaten to break through when Matt Williams came into the game and he issued a one out walk to Carlton Tanabe to load the bags. When he wriggled out of that jam to collect a hold he handed a fairly routine save to the Korean master. One had to feel for Adelaide starter Reed Brown who struck out seven over his terrific seven inning start, only to be beaten by that one solitary run as his team fell out of the playoff race. The only players in this game with two hits were Adelaide stars Stefan Welch and Denny Almonte as the Bite topped the Blue Sox on the hits count 7-5. Once again it counted for little as Sydney took the series 3-1.

SUMMARY:  Rockies’ professional David Kandilas was a constant offensive force for Sydney with a team best four hits and six RBIs. He was also one of three home run hitters for the ‘B-Sox’, along with Boss Moanaroa and Michael Lysaught. Import big guns Denny Almonte and Calvin Anderson led the Bite via five hits each, with Anderson leading the RBI men with five having done most of his work in his monster Game 2. Almonte had been cooling off after a blistering start to the season, but he rose to the occasion in the post season with a double, a triple and two home runs for his three RBIs. Anderson and Carlton Tanabe also “went yard” for the Bite. Paul Mildren deserves to be dismayed that his superb complete game produced the only win of the series for Adelaide as his was clearly the outstanding pitching effort. Sydney’s winning starters Craig Anderson, Aidan Francis and Vaughan Harris were also obvious keys to the Blue Sox triumph at Norwood.
